Kobe Nature Discovery Plan

Kobe is often associated with its stylish and cosmopolitan image,
but it's also home to abundant natural attractions such as Mt. Rokko and Arima Onsen,
a historic hot spring often called
the "hidden retreat of Kansai."
This plan will guide you
through the natural charms of Kobe.

  • 10:00
    Departure (approx. 1 hour)
Depart from your hotel or a station in Osaka and head to Mt. Rokko.
Once you arrive, take the famous Rokko Cable Car, which serves as the gateway to the mountain and climbs up to the summit.
Though it's only a 10-minute ride, the experience of riding a cable car and enjoying the scenic views along the way is truly special.
  • 11:10
    Rokko Garden Terrace
    (approx. 2 hours)
After arriving at the summit, take a short walk to reach Rokko Garden Terrace.
Here, you can stroll through the English Garden, which features seasonal flowers throughout the year.
Don’t miss Rokko-Shidare Observatory, the highest viewing platform on Mt. Rokko. It offers different scenic views from both inside and outside, and at night, transforms into a stunning vista known as the “10 million dollar night view.”
You can also visit the Shidare Museum, an interactive art space showcasing creative works for all ages to enjoy.
For lunch, we recommend trying the mountain’s specialty: grilled lamb at one of the on-site restaurants.

  • 13:10
    Transfer (approx. 15 mins)
After enjoying the mountain air, travel to one of Japan’s three oldest hot springs, Arima Onsen.
  • 13:25
    Arima Onsen (approx. 1 hour)
Arima Onsen has a legendary history dating back to mythology, even appearing in ancient chronicles such as the Nihon Shoki.
The famous warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi was known to favor this hot spring town, and you’ll find statues and stories that reflect his deep connection with the area.
For day visitors, the best way to enjoy Arima’s hot springs is at the public baths Kin no Yu (Golden Spring) and Gin no Yu (Silver Spring).
Kin no Yu is named after the iron-rich water that turns golden when exposed to air. Known for its moisturizing and beautifying effects, it's especially popular among women.
Gin no Yu offers two types of clear, odorless baths: a carbonated spring and a radium spring, both believed to warm the body deeply and help with circulation and overall wellness.

  • 14:25
Onsen Town Stroll (approx. 2 hours)
Beyond bathing, Arima Onsen is a delightful town to explore on foot.
Neither fully urban nor completely rural, the charming ambiance of this onsen town is unique.
Start at Yumemizu Square, where you'll find a statue of Hideyoshi. Then, walk to Nene Bridge, with a statue of Hideyoshi’s wife, and visit Onsenji Temple, the oldest in Arima, where you can try meditation or traditional Buddhist vegetarian meals.
You can also enjoy gourmet walking tours. Must-try local treats include:
Kobe beef croquettes, Gelato made from Rokko’s fresh milk and Carbonated rice crackers made with Arima's spring water.
This carbonated spring water is said to have inspired the creation of Japan’s first cider: Arima Cider—a perfect refreshment after your bath or a charming souvenir.
